Product Overview
Oral glucose gel (40% dextrose) for swift elevation of low blood sugar. Easy-to-use 25 g tube delivering 10 g glucose per dose, ideal for emergency management of hypoglycaemia.
Description
GlucoBoost Glucose Oral Gel 40% is a fast-acting carbohydrate gel formulated to provide an immediate source of glucose (dextrose) when blood sugar levels fall too low, a condition known as hypoglycaemia. It is widely used in clinical settings, including NHS trusts, ambulances and community care, and recommended for people with diabetes who may experience low blood glucose episodes.
Each tube contains 40% glucose (dextrose monohydrate) and delivers approximately 10 g of carbohydrate per 25 g tube. The clear, fast-absorbing gel can be administered directly into the mouth or via a feeding tube (e.g., PEG) when clinically appropriate, helping to raise blood glucose quickly within minutes.
This product is often supplied in a triple-pack of three 25 g tubes, making it convenient to carry in bags, first-aid kits or clinical environments for emergency use.
Brand: GlucoBoost (manufactured/distributed by Ennogen Healthcare)
Pack Size: 3 × 25 g tubes (total 75 g gel)
How to Use
Adults and children (aged 5 years and over):
- Remove the cap from a 25 g tube of GlucoBoost gel.
- Squeeze the gel directly into the mouth (along the inside of the cheek or under the tongue) — this allows rapid absorption.
- Wait 5-15 minutes, then retest blood glucose. If levels are still low, administer another appropriate dose as recommended by your healthcare professional or per clinical guidelines (e.g., NICE suggests administering 10-20 g of fast-acting carbohydrate then re-testing).
- Once blood glucose normalises, follow with a longer-acting carbohydrate snack if appropriate (e.g., sandwich, biscuit) to stabilise levels.
Important UK clinical note:
- For very young children (<5 years), consult a clinician for age-specific guidance.
- If administering through a feeding tube, follow local clinical guidelines and professional training.
Ingredients
Active Carbohydrate Source:
- Dextrose monohydrate (glucose) – provides rapid-acting carbohydrate (40% w/w).
Other Components:
- Water – gel base.
- Citric acid monohydrate & sodium citrate – pH stabilisers.
- Gelling agent (e.g., sodium carboxymethyl cellulose) – texture and suspension.
- Preservative (e.g., potassium sorbate) – product stability.
Form: Clear, sugar-free gel designed for oral administration.
Note: As a clinical product, GlucoBoost is not a typical foodstuff; it is intended to provide measured rapid carbohydrate in clinical and emergency contexts.
How to Use
Potential Adverse Effects
When used appropriately, GlucoBoost is generally well tolerated. Rare or mild effects related to glucose intake may include:
- Nausea or transient stomach discomfort if large amounts are swallowed rapidly.
- Hyperglycaemia (high blood sugar) if carbohydrate intake exceeds metabolic needs — monitor with blood glucose testing.
Warnings & Precautions
- For oral use only. Do not inject or apply to broken skin.
- Use in Hypoglycaemia: Only use if a low blood glucose episode has been confirmed or strongly suspected (symptoms such as shaking, sweating, confusion).
- Check blood glucose: Re-test after administration to confirm correction of hypoglycaemia.
- Medical conditions: If you have medical conditions affecting carbohydrate metabolism, use under professional guidance.
- Children: Always seek age-appropriate advice for younger children and follow clinical recommendations.
