Product Overview
Prescription combined pill (21-day pack): 1 tablet daily for 21 days, then 7 days pill-free. 3 strips (3 months). No STI protection.
Description
Microgynon 30 is a combined oral contraceptive pill (“the Pill”) used to prevent pregnancy. It contains two hormones: oestrogen (ethinylestradiol 30 micrograms) and progestogen (levonorgestrel 150 micrograms).
It helps prevent pregnancy in three ways:
- Stops an egg being released from the ovaries (prevents ovulation)
- Thickens cervical mucus, making it harder for sperm to enter the womb
- Helps prevent the lining of the womb thickening, reducing the chance of an egg implanting
Pack size: 3 strips of 21 beige sugar-coated tablets (63 tablets total).
Important: Microgynon 30 does not protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
How to Use
Take Microgynon 30 exactly as directed by your prescriber and the patient leaflet.
Standard 21-day schedule
- Take 1 tablet every day for 21 days, ideally at the same time each day. The strip is marked with days of the week to help you keep track.
- Then have 7 days with no tablets (pill-free break). You should usually have a withdrawal bleed in the break.
- Start your next strip after 7 pill-free days, even if bleeding has not stopped, and start on time.
Starting Microgynon 30 (examples)
- New start / restarting: it is best to take the first tablet on the first day of your next period for immediate protection.
- Switching from another pill: directions depend on whether you are switching from a 21-day pill, a 28-day pill, or a progestogen-only pill; follow the leaflet or your prescriber’s advice.
Missed tablets / vomiting / severe diarrhoea: what to do depends on how many tablets were missed and when. Follow the leaflet instructions carefully and use additional contraception if advised.
