Pepto-Bismol 120ml

Pepto-Bismol 120ml is an oral suspension for the symptomatic relief of five common digestive complaints: nausea, heartburn, indigestion, upset stomach and diarrhoea. It contains bismuth subsalicylate, an active ingredient that works by forming a soothing, protective coating in the stomach and intestines to help relieve discomfort.

This liquid suspension is suitable for adults and adolescents aged 16 years and over. It is designed for short-term use and can be taken at the first signs of digestive upset, making it a practical option to keep at home, at work or when travelling. The 120ml bottle is supplied as a pink, smooth oral suspension and is intended for oral use only. Each 30ml dose contains 525mg bismuth subsalicylate.

Adults and children aged 16 years and over only: shake the bottle well before use. For oral use only. One dose is 30ml. Pour 30ml into the cup provided and swallow. Repeat the dose every 30 to 60 minutes if needed.

Do not take more than 8 doses in 24 hours. Do not exceed the stated dose. Do not take for more than 2 days unless advised by a doctor. Use for longer than 2 days, or in higher doses than recommended, has been associated with an increased risk of severe side effects.

General advice:

• Shake well before each dose
• Use the measuring cup provided
• Can be taken with or without food
• If you have diarrhoea, drink plenty of fluids and consider oral rehydration if needed, especially if frail or elderly 

Active ingredient:

Bismuth subsalicylate 17.5mg per ml. Each 30ml dose contains 525mg bismuth subsalicylate.

Full ingredients:

Bismuth subsalicylate, aluminium magnesium silicate, methylcellulose, gellan gum, methyl salicylate, sucralose, salicylic acid, sorbic acid, benzoic acid (E210), sodium salicylate, amaranth (E123), purified water.

Also contains:

Sodium, benzoic acid (E210) and amaranth (E123). One 30ml dose contains 7.7mg benzoic acid, 2.1mg amaranth, and 4.1mg sodium. 

Do not use if you are under 16 years, allergic to salicylates including aspirin, allergic to any of the ingredients, taking other salicylates including aspirin, or if you are pregnant or breast-feeding. Pepto-Bismol should not be used by those under 16 years because of a possible association between salicylates and Reye’s syndrome, a very rare but very serious disease.

Ask a doctor before use if you have a blood clotting disorder or gout, or if you are taking medicines for thinning the blood (anticoagulants), diabetes, gout, or tetracycline antibiotics. Do not take with aspirin or other salicylates.

Stop using and speak to a doctor if:

• symptoms are severe or persist for more than 2 days
• diarrhoea is accompanied by fever
• you experience ringing in the ears
• you notice anything unusual or unexpected side effects
• you accidentally take too much

Possible side effects:

• temporary and harmless darkening of the stool and/or tongue
• allergic reactions may occur, partly due to amaranth (E123)

Storage:

• Do not refrigerate or freeze
• Do not use after the expiry date
• Keep out of the sight and reach of children
