Sumatriptan Migraine Relief - 100 mg Pack of 6

Sumatriptan 100mg Tablets are used for the acute treatment of migraine attacks. The official medicines.org.uk leaflet states that sumatriptan belongs to a group of medicines called triptans or 5-HT1 receptor agonists. It works by reducing the temporary widening of blood vessels in the head, which helps relieve migraine headache and associated symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to light and sensitivity to sound.

This medicine is used once a migraine has started. It does not prevent migraine attacks, and the leaflet states it should not be used where migraine has not been diagnosed.

Take Sumatriptan 100mg Tablets exactly as your doctor, prescriber or pharmacist has told you. The leaflet says the tablet should be taken as soon as possible after the start of a migraine attack, although it can still be effective if taken later during the attack.

The leaflet states that the recommended adult dose is one 50mg tablet swallowed whole with water. Some patients may need 100mg. If the migraine improves but then returns, one further tablet may be taken, provided there is a gap of at least 2 hours between doses. Do not take more than 300mg in 24 hours.

If the first tablet does not help, the leaflet advises not taking a second tablet for the same attack. Sumatriptan may still be taken for a later migraine attack. Swallow the tablets whole with water. This medicine is not for children under 18 years, and it is generally not recommended in adults over 65 years.

Active ingredient:

Each film-coated tablet contains 100mg sumatriptan as sumatriptan succinate.

Other ingredients:

Core: lactose monohydrate, lactose, croscarmellose sodium, microcrystalline cellulose, magnesium stearate.

Coating: lactose monohydrate, mannitol (E421), titanium dioxide (E171), triacetin and talc.

Allergy / intolerance advice:

This product contains lactose, so it should be used with caution if you have been told by a healthcare professional that you have an intolerance to some sugars.

Do not take Sumatriptan if you are allergic to sumatriptan or any of the ingredients, if you have ischaemic heart disease, angina, a history of heart attack, circulation problems, previous stroke or TIA, severe liver problems, uncontrolled high blood pressure, or if you are taking ergotamine, methysergide, another triptan / 5-HT1 agonist, MAOIs used within the last 2 weeks, or lithium.

Speak to a doctor or pharmacist before use if you have risk factors for heart disease, such as diabetes, high cholesterol, being overweight, smoking, nicotine replacement use, a family history of heart disease, or if you are a male over 40 or a postmenopausal woman. The leaflet also advises caution if you have kidney problems, liver problems, epilepsy or a history of fits, or if you are allergic to sulfonamide antibiotics.

Possible side effects include pain, heaviness, pressure or tightness in the chest, throat or other parts of the body, dizziness, drowsiness, weakness, nausea, vomiting, temporary increases in blood pressure, flushing, shortness of breath, and sensations such as tingling, heat, cold, pressure or tightness. Serious side effects needing urgent medical attention include allergic reactions, seizures, heart problems, and signs of stroke.

This medicine can cause drowsiness or dizziness, either from the migraine itself or from treatment, so care should be taken with driving or operating machinery. The leaflet also warns against using sumatriptan with SSRIs or SNRIs without medical advice because of the risk of serotonin syndrome.
