Important: this service is not for alcohol dependence or withdrawal
This service is designed to support people who want structured help to cut down their drinking. It is not suitable if you are, or may be, physically dependent on alcohol. If you drink heavily every day, have tried to stop or cut down before and experienced symptoms such as shaking, sweating, anxiety, nausea or seeing or hearing things that aren't there, or if you feel you need a drink just to feel normal, please do not try to stop or reduce your drinking suddenly without medical support, alcohol withdrawal can be dangerous and, in severe cases, life-threatening. Please speak to your GP or contact a specialist alcohol service instead for a proper assessment. If you experience confusion, seizures, hallucinations, a racing heartbeat or severe shaking, seek emergency help by calling 999 or going to A&E.
FAQs
It depends on the level and pattern of your drinking. Your online consultation is designed to check for signs of possible dependence, if these are present, you'll be advised to seek specialist support rather than use this service, as stopping or cutting down suddenly can be risky in that situation.
This service supports people who want general help reducing their drinking towards lower-risk levels. It is not a medical detox or dependence treatment programme, those need specialist, often in-person, supervision.
UK guidelines suggest staying under 14 units a week, spread across three or more days, with several drink-free days each week. Your clinician can help you work towards a realistic target for your situation.
Yes, your consultation is reviewed by a registered clinician and handled with the same confidentiality as any other healthcare consultation.
This can include practical strategies for cutting down, goal-setting, and follow-up review with a clinician to see how you're getting on, adjusted to what works for you.
Not necessarily for general support to cut down, your consultation is handled online. If your answers suggest possible dependence, you'll be signposted to your GP or a specialist alcohol service instead, as that needs an in-person assessment.
Stop and seek medical advice. Feeling unwell when reducing alcohol, especially with shaking, sweating or anxiety, can be a sign your body needs a supervised approach, contact your GP, NHS 111, or go to A&E if symptoms are severe.
