When to seek urgent help

Most back pain is not serious and improves within a few weeks with simple self-care. However, certain symptoms can indicate a rare but serious condition called cauda equina syndrome, which is a medical emergency. Go to A&E or call 999 immediately if you experience: loss of control over your bladder or bowel, or new difficulty starting or stopping urination; numbness or tingling around your genitals, buttocks or inner thighs (saddle numbness); or new weakness in one or both legs that makes it hard to stand or walk. See a GP promptly if your back pain is severe, follows a significant injury, or comes with unexplained weight loss, fever, or pain that's worse at night or doesn't ease with rest, as these can occasionally point to another underlying cause needing further investigation.

Frequently Asked

FAQs

Not usually. Most everyday back pain doesn't need imaging and improves with simple treatment and self-care. Your online consultation is designed to flag any symptoms that would need further investigation instead.

Gentle movement and staying as active as you comfortably can is usually recommended over prolonged bed rest, which can slow recovery. Your clinician can advise on what's appropriate for you.

Many episodes of back pain ease significantly within a few weeks. If your pain persists beyond this, or keeps recurring, it's worth a follow-up review.

You'll be asked about any medication you already take during your consultation, so your clinician can check what's safe to combine before recommending anything.

For many people, yes, physiotherapy can complement pain relief by addressing movement, posture and strength. Your clinician can advise whether this is worth considering for you.

No, your consultation is handled entirely online. You'll only be advised to seek in-person or urgent care if your symptoms suggest something that needs a closer examination.

Staying gently active, avoiding prolonged sitting or bed rest, applying heat, and maintaining good posture when lifting can all support recovery alongside any treatment.
