When red flag symptoms need emergency care

Ordinary migraine, while debilitating, is not dangerous. However, some headache symptoms can signal a medical emergency and need immediate assessment. Call 999 or go to A&E straight away if you experience: a sudden, severe thunderclap headache that reaches maximum intensity within seconds to minutes; a headache with a high fever, stiff neck or rash; a headache that develops after a head injury; or a headache with new neurological symptoms such as weakness, numbness, slurred speech, double vision, difficulty walking, a seizure, or loss of consciousness. These are different from typical migraine, are not appropriate for treatment through this service, and should never be delayed, seek urgent in-person medical advice straight away.
