When to see a GP instead
This service is for stable, previously diagnosed or straightforward plaque psoriasis. See a GP if this is the first time you've had these symptoms and you haven't had a formal diagnosis, if your psoriasis covers a large area of your body or is rapidly worsening, if your skin becomes hot, swollen, or weeps fluid (a possible sign of infection), if you feel generally unwell or feverish, or if you have joint pain, stiffness, or swelling, which can be a sign of psoriatic arthritis and needs separate assessment.
FAQs
Plaque psoriasis is a long-term skin condition that causes skin cells to renew faster than usual, leading to raised, scaly patches. It isn't caused by poor hygiene and cannot be caught from someone else.
No. Psoriasis is not infectious and cannot be passed from person to person through touch or close contact.
There's currently no cure, but treatment can help control flare-ups, reduce scaling and itching, and give many people long periods of clear or nearly clear skin.
You'll answer questions about your symptoms, medical history, and any medicines you take. A UK-based clinician reviews your answers and decides whether a prescription is appropriate.
This varies by treatment and individual, but many people notice an improvement within a few weeks of starting treatment as directed.
Psoriasis is a chronic condition that can flare and settle over time, so some people need treatment on and off, or ongoing management, under clinical guidance.
If our clinician feels you need a face-to-face examination or further tests, they'll let you know and advise you to see your GP.
