When to seek urgent help
This service is for suspected Strep A throat infection and is not for emergencies. Call 999 or go to A&E immediately, do not wait for this service, if a child (or adult) has difficulty breathing or is breathing very fast, is drowsy, floppy or much harder to wake than usual, has a bluish tinge to the skin, lips or tongue, shows signs of severe dehydration (such as not passing urine for 12 hours), or is getting rapidly worse or has a rash that doesn't fade when you press a glass against it.
FAQs
It's designed primarily for children and families with a suspected Strep A throat infection, though adults with similar symptoms can also use it.
You'll receive an at-home swab test kit with clear instructions. Results are typically available within minutes and are reviewed alongside your consultation answers by a clinician.
No, antibiotics are only prescribed where a clinician judges them appropriate, based on your test result and symptoms. Not all sore throats need antibiotics.
Rapid tests are a useful screening tool but, like all tests, aren't 100% accurate. Your clinician will consider your symptoms alongside the result, and may recommend further assessment if needed.
Stop and seek urgent help, see the safety information above. This service is not a substitute for emergency care if your child deteriorates.
A sandpaper-like rash alongside sore throat and fever can be a feature of Strep A infection (sometimes called scarlet fever). This service can assess and, where appropriate, treat it, but seek urgent care if you're at all worried about your child's condition.
Once your test result and consultation are reviewed, appropriate treatment can be prescribed and dispatched promptly, exact timing depends on when your kit is used and reviewed.
