When to seek urgent help
An advance supply is only for straightforward UTI symptoms recognised early. Do not rely on it, and seek urgent medical attention or go to A&E, if you develop a high temperature, shivering or chills, pain in your back or side (loin pain), nausea or vomiting, blood in your urine, or if your symptoms don't start improving within 48 hours of starting antibiotics. These can be signs of a more serious kidney infection. If you're pregnant, male, or symptoms occur in a child, standard advance-supply criteria don't apply, see a GP instead.
FAQs
It's a short course of antibiotics prescribed in advance by a clinician, for you to keep at home and start taking as soon as you recognise the start of a urinary tract infection, without needing to arrange an appointment first.
This service is generally suitable for adults with a well-established pattern of recurrent UTIs who can reliably recognise their own symptoms. The clinician reviewing your consultation will confirm whether it's appropriate for you.
You should only start it when you recognise your usual UTI symptoms, such as a burning sensation when urinating, needing to urinate more often, or cloudy or strong-smelling urine. The clinician will give you guidance during your consultation.
Yes, you can request another consultation. Clinicians will periodically check that the advance-supply approach is still right for you, and may suggest further investigation if infections keep recurring.
Advance supplies are intended for occasional recurrent episodes, not continuous use. Your clinician will discuss safe use and may recommend further assessment if you need antibiotics very frequently.
Use the standby course only for classic UTI symptoms. Anything unusual, more severe, or accompanied by fever or back pain needs same-day medical assessment instead.
Tell the clinician about all medicines you take during your consultation so they can check for interactions before prescribing.
