Description
Nitrofurantoin 100mg Prolonged-Release Capsules is a prescription-only antibiotic used to treat (and sometimes prevent) urinary tract infections such as cystitis, when prescribed by a clinician. Nitrofurantoin works by killing bacteria in the urine and urinary tract.
Pack size: 14 capsules (commonly used for a 7-day course at twice-daily dosing, if prescribed that way).
How to Use
Always take exactly as directed on the dispensing label.
How to take
- Take with food or milk (at meal times) to reduce stomach upset and improve absorption.
- Swallow capsules whole with water. Do not open, crush or chew.
- Space doses evenly (e.g., morning and evening).
- Finish the full course, even if you feel better.
Typical prescribed dose (when used for uncomplicated UTI in adults and over-12s): 100mg twice daily for 7 days (your prescriber may choose a different regimen).

Side Effects & Warnings
Prescription-only medicine.
Do not take / speak to a clinician before use if:
- You are allergic to nitrofurantoin or any ingredient.
- You have significant kidney problems (nitrofurantoin may not be suitable).
- You have porphyria or G6PD deficiency, or you are near labour/delivery (specific restrictions apply).
- You have been told you are intolerant to some sugars (this medicine contains lactose and sucrose).
Stop and seek urgent medical help if you develop:
- Breathing problems, persistent cough, chest pain, or sudden shortness of breath (possible serious lung reaction).
- Signs of liver problems (yellowing of skin/eyes, dark urine, severe fatigue).
- Severe rash, facial swelling, or difficulty breathing (possible severe allergy).
- Numbness/tingling or unusual weakness (possible nerve effects).
Common side effects can include: feeling sick, stomach upset, headache (taking with food can help).
Important note: Urine may become darker while taking nitrofurantoin; this can happen.
