Description
Mometasone Furoate 50 micrograms Nasal Spray is a prescription corticosteroid nasal spray used to relieve inflammation and allergy symptoms affecting the nose. It helps reduce swelling, irritation, sneezing, itching, and a blocked or runny nose.
This medicine is commonly prescribed for:
- Hay fever (seasonal allergic rhinitis)
- Perennial allergic rhinitis (year-round allergies such as house dust mite or pet dander)
- Nasal polyps in adults (small growths inside the nose that can cause blockage and breathing difficulties)
Mometasone furoate works locally in the nose to control symptoms, helping to improve nasal airflow and comfort when used regularly as prescribed.
How to Use
Always use this medicine exactly as prescribed by your doctor or pharmacist.
Hay Fever & Perennial Rhinitis
Adults and children aged 12 years and over
- Two sprays into each nostril once daily
- Once symptoms are controlled, the dose may be reduced to one spray in each nostril once daily
Children aged 3 to 11 years
- One spray into each nostril once daily
Nasal Polyps (Adults 18 years and over)
- Two sprays into each nostril once daily
- If symptoms are not controlled after 5–6 weeks, the dose may be increased to two sprays in each nostril twice daily
Important usage advice:
- Shake the bottle gently before use
- Prime the spray before first use or if not used for 14 days
- Use regularly for best results — full benefit may take up to 2 days
- Do not exceed the prescribed dose
Ingredients
Active ingredient:
- Mometasone furoate 50 micrograms per spray
Other ingredients:
- Microcrystalline cellulose
- Carmellose sodium
- Glycerol
- Sodium citrate dihydrate
- Citric acid monohydrate
- Polysorbate 80
- Benzalkonium chloride
- Water for injections
Each actuation contains 20 micrograms of benzalkonium chloride, which may cause nasal irritation with prolonged use.
Side Effects & Warnings
Do Not Use If:
- You are allergic to mometasone furoate or any of the other ingredients
- You have an untreated infection in the nose
- You have recently had nasal surgery or a nasal injury and it has not yet healed
Warnings & Precautions
Speak to your doctor or pharmacist before use if you:
- Have tuberculosis or another infection
- Are using other corticosteroid medicines (oral or injectable)
- Have cystic fibrosis
- Have a weakened immune system
- Are pregnant or breastfeeding
Long-term or high-dose use may rarely affect hormone levels.
Children using corticosteroid nasal sprays long-term should have their growth monitored.
Avoid contact with people who have measles or chickenpox if your immune system is weakened.
Possible Side Effects
Common side effects (up to 1 in 10 people):
- Headache
- Sneezing or nasal irritation
- Nosebleeds
- Sore nose or throat
Rare but serious side effects (seek urgent medical advice):
- Severe allergic reactions (swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat)
- Difficulty breathing or wheezing
- Visual disturbances, including blurred vision
- Damage to the nasal septum
