Product Overview

Description
Nicorette® Original Gum 4mg is a nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) used to relieve and/or prevent nicotine withdrawal symptoms and reduce cravings when you try to stop smoking tobacco or vaping, when you are cutting down, or at times when you can’t or don’t want to smoke/vape (temporary abstinence).
When you chew the gum correctly, nicotine is released and absorbed through the lining of the mouth. This helps ease unpleasant withdrawal symptoms and cravings, without giving the “buzz” associated with smoking or vaping.
Who is the 4mg strength for?
- Best suited for people who smoke more than 20 cigarettes a day or are heavy vapers (e.g. vape frequently or use high-strength e-liquid).
Pack size
- 105 pieces (Original flavour, blister packed).
How to Use
Who can use it
- Adults and children aged 12 years and over.
- Do not give to children under 12 years.
Dose
- If you smoke more than 20 cigarettes a day or are a heavy vaper: use one 4mg gum as required to relieve cravings.
- Use only one piece at a time.
- Do not use more than 15 gums per day.
How to chew (the Nicorette chew-and-rest technique)
Nicorette gum is not chewed like ordinary chewing gum. Chew to release nicotine, then rest so nicotine can be absorbed through the mouth. If you chew continuously, nicotine may be released too quickly and swallowed, which can irritate the throat, upset the stomach or cause hiccups.
- Chew slowly until the taste becomes strong.
- Rest between gum and cheek.
- Chew again when the taste has faded.
- Continue for about 30 minutes, then dispose of the gum carefully.
Dentures
- If you have false teeth, the gum may stick and on rare occasions damage dentures. If this is a problem, other forms of NRT may be more suitable.
Stopping smoking/vaping
- Use the gum in place of cigarettes/e-cigarettes when needed, then reduce the number of gums gradually until you stop completely. Behavioural support improves success rates.
If you use too many gums or smoke/vape while using
- You may experience symptoms of too much nicotine (e.g. nausea, vomiting, increased salivation, stomach pain, diarrhoea, sweating, headache, dizziness, weakness). Seek urgent medical advice and do not smoke or vape.

Warnings & precautions
Talk to a doctor, pharmacist or nurse before use if:
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding. Try to stop without NRT first. If you can’t, intermittent NRT (including gum) may be used as a safer alternative to smoking, and breastfeeding should be just before using gum to minimise nicotine exposure to the baby.
- You are in hospital because of heart disease (including heart attack, chest pain, rhythm problems, angina, high blood pressure or stroke).
- You have a stomach or duodenal ulcer, inflammation of the stomach, or inflammation of the oesophagus.
- You have liver or kidney disease, an overactive thyroid, phaeochromocytoma, diabetes (monitor blood sugars more often), have ever had seizures (fits), or you’re finding it difficult to stop using the gum.
- You take certain medicines (e.g. theophylline, clozapine, ropinirole), as doses may need adjusting when you stop smoking or cut down.
Important ingredient information
- Contains sorbitol (a source of fructose). If you have an intolerance to some sugars or hereditary fructose intolerance, seek advice before use.
- Contains E321, which may cause local skin reactions (e.g. contact dermatitis) or irritation to eyes/mucous membranes.
- Contains a small amount of ethanol per gum (not expected to have noticeable effects).
- Contains less than 1 mmol sodium (23mg) per gum (essentially “sodium-free”).
Keep out of sight and reach of children and animals
Nicotine can be very dangerous and sometimes fatal if taken by children.
Possible side effects
Nicorette gum may cause throat irritation and increased salivation, especially at the start. Chewing too quickly can cause hiccups, throat irritation or stomach upset.
Stop using and get medical help immediately if you think you are having a serious allergic reaction (swelling of face/mouth/lips/tongue/throat, difficulty breathing, severe dizziness).
Side effects can be reported via the MHRA Yellow Card Scheme.
Storage
- Do not store above 25°C.
- Do not use after the Use before date. Dispose of used gum safely and away from children and animals.
