What is Wegovy?

Wegovy is a prescription-only weight management medicine containing semaglutide, a medication that belongs to a class known as GLP-1 receptor agonists. GLP-1 is a naturally occurring hormone released after eating that helps regulate appetite and food intake. Wegovy mimics this hormone, helping your brain recognize feelings of fullness and reducing hunger signals throughout the day.

Unlike traditional weight loss products that simply suppress appetite temporarily, Wegovy works on the body's natural appetite-regulation pathways to help support long-term weight management. It is administered as a once-weekly injection using a pre-filled FlexTouch pen.

Who can use Wegovy?

Adults

Wegovy may be prescribed for adults who have:

• A BMI of 27 kg/m² or greater (overweight) with at least one weight-related health condition

Examples of weight-related conditions include:

• High blood pressure

• Type 2 diabetes

• High cholesterol

• Cardiovascular disease

• Sleep apnoea

Adolescents

Wegovy may also be prescribed for adolescents aged 12 years and older who:

• Have obesity

• Weigh more than 60kg

Wegovy should always be used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity programme.

Additional cardiovascular benefits

In eligible adults with established cardiovascular disease and overweight or obesity, Wegovy has been approved to reduce the risk of:

• Heart attack

• Stroke

• Cardiovascular death

How often is Wegovy used?

Wegovy is administered:

• Once weekly

• On the same day each week where possible

• At any time of day

• With or without food

The injection is given under the skin (subcutaneous injection).

Injection sites

Wegovy can be injected into:

• Upper thigh

• Upper arm

Rotate injection sites regularly to reduce irritation.

Dose Escalation Schedule

Treatment begins at a low dose to allow your body to adjust and minimise gastrointestinal side effects.

Your healthcare provider may adjust your treatment based on your response and tolerance.

If you miss a dose

• If less than 5 days have passed, take the missed dose as soon as possible.

• If more than 5 days have passed, skip the missed dose and continue with your next scheduled injection.

• Never take a double dose to make up for a missed injection.

Important advice

• Use exactly as prescribed.

• Do not share your pen with anyone else.

• Use a new needle for every injection.

• Do not combine with other GLP-1 medicines unless instructed by your healthcare provider.

• Stay well hydrated, especially if experiencing nausea, vomiting, or diarrhoea.

Like all medicines, Wegovy can cause side effects, although not everybody experiences them. Most side effects are mild to moderate and often improve as treatment continues.

Very Common Side Effects

May affect more than 1 in 10 people:

• Nausea

• Vomiting

• Diarrhoea

• Constipation

• Headache

• Abdominal pain

These are most common when starting treatment or increasing the dose.

Common Side Effects

May affect up to 1 in 10 people:

• Indigestion

• Heartburn

• Bloating

• Excess gas

• Dizziness

• Fatigue

• Injection site reactions

• Hair thinning or hair loss associated with weight loss

• Burping

• Gastrointestinal discomfort

Serious Side Effects – Seek Medical Attention

Pancreatitis (Inflammation of the Pancreas)

Stop treatment and seek urgent medical help if you develop:

• Severe abdominal pain

• Pain radiating to the back

• Persistent vomiting

Severe Allergic Reaction

Seek emergency medical assistance if you experience:

• Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat

• Difficulty breathing

• Severe rash

Dehydration

Persistent vomiting or diarrhoea can lead to dehydration, particularly in patients with kidney problems. Drink plenty of fluids and seek medical advice if symptoms become severe.

Low Blood Sugar (Hypoglycaemia)

Risk may increase in people with diabetes who are also using medications such as insulin or sulfonylureas.

Symptoms include:

• Shaking

• Sweating

• Dizziness

• Hunger

• Confusion

• Fast heartbeat
