What is the Wegovy pill?

The Wegovy pill is a once-daily oral weight loss tablet containing semaglutide — the very same active ingredient found in the Wegovy injection. It received approval from the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) in June 2026, with a UK launch anticipated in early July 2026.

Wegovy tablets are manufactured by Novo Nordisk, the Danish pharmaceutical company responsible for Wegovy, Ozempic, and Rybelsus.

How do Wegovy pills work?

Wegovy pills belong to a class of medicines called GLP-1 receptor agonists. They mimic GLP-1, a hormone your body produces naturally, activating receptors in the brain that boost feelings of fullness, dial down hunger, and slow gastric emptying — the speed at which food leaves your stomach — so you stay satisfied for longer.

The science behind the tablet is what makes it so clever. Your stomach can't distinguish between medicine and food, so under normal circumstances it would break semaglutide down before it had any chance to work.

To solve this, the semaglutide is paired with a carrier molecule that acts like a bodyguard, shielding it just long enough to be absorbed into the bloodstream. From that point on, it behaves exactly like the injectable version.

For many people, that can mean:

• feeling fuller sooner during meals

• experiencing fewer cravings and less temptation to snack

• finding it easier to eat smaller portions without feeling deprived

That said, Wegovy pills aren't a quick fix. They deliver the best results when combined with a balanced diet and more physical activity.

Can I switch from Wegovy injections to pills?

1. Changing from injection to tablets
   If you are switching from the injection to tablets, take your first tablet on the day your next injection is due (day 8). Do not take the injection, take the tablet instead.

2. How to take the tablets
   Take the tablet first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. Your stomach should be empty for at least 8 hours before taking it. Take the tablet on its own, without any food or other medicines. Do not eat or drink anything except water for 30 minutes after taking the tablet.

Moving from Wegovy injections to the pill is entirely possible, and the dose you switch to depends on the injection strength you're currently using. For instance, if you're on the 2.4 mg injection, you'd transition to the 25 mg pill.

Any switch must always be carried out under clinical supervision. The table below shows which pill dose you can safely move to:

Although 25 mg is the strongest available pill dose, on average it isn't quite as effective as the maximum 7.2 mg injection. It is, however, slightly more effective than the 2.4 mg injection — and for many people, a daily tablet may simply be a more convenient fit depending on personal preference.

Can I switch from Mounjaro to Wegovy pills?

Switching from Mounjaro to the Wegovy pill is possible, but it should always be done with your prescriber's guidance, and the right conversion will depend on the side effects you've experienced on the injection. We are still waiting for the Switching guidelines from Manufacturers & Clinicians.

Understanding the differences between Wegovy pills and injections

If you're just beginning your weight loss journey, you might be weighing up which type of treatment suits you best. It really comes down to what you want to get out of your treatment.

Weight loss in clinical trials

Both forms of Wegovy share the same active ingredient, semaglutide, but the trial data reveals some differences in how each performs for weight loss.

The STEP 1 trial found that Wegovy injections produced an average weight loss of roughly 17% over 68 weeks. The more recent STEP UP trial (2025) examined the higher 7.2 mg dose and recorded average weight loss of around 21% over 72 weeks.

For the pill, a recent analysis of the OASIS trial showed an average of around 13.6% over 64 weeks, rising to approximately 17% among those who stayed on treatment throughout.

Convenience

This is where the pill holds particular appeal for some people. There are no needles, no sharps bins, and no need to keep the medication refrigerated. If the thought of self-injecting puts you off, a tablet could be the better route.

That said, while Wegovy injections can be taken with or without food, Wegovy pills must be taken on an empty stomach. So although swallowing a tablet may feel more appealing, planning around when you can and can't eat in the morning does carry its own trade-offs.

Ultimately, the choice of which is more convenient day-to-day is yours to make.

Side effects of Wegovy pills

As with any medication, Wegovy pills can cause side effects in some people, though not everyone will experience them. Side effects are most likely when you first begin treatment or when your dose is increased.

Reassuringly, they're usually mild, and there's plenty you can do to keep them manageable.

Common side effects of Wegovy pills may include:

• nausea

• diarrhoea

• vomiting

• constipation

• stomach pain

• changes in skin sensations

• headaches

• tiredness

• an upset stomach

• dizziness

• bloating or belching

• wind

• heartburn

• hair loss

When to seek medical help

Contact your GP or prescriber, or seek urgent medical help, if you notice any of the following:

• Pancreatitis: persistent, severe stomach pain that won't ease, with or without nausea or vomiting. The pain may also radiate through to your back.

• Gallbladder problems (such as gallstones): pain in your upper stomach, a fever, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or clay-coloured stools.

• Low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia): especially if you also take insulin or sulfonylureas. Warning signs include dizziness, blurred vision, anxiety, sweating, slurred speech, shakiness, confusion, a racing heartbeat, or feeling jittery.

• Dehydration and kidney problems: ongoing nausea, vomiting, or diarrhoea can lead to dehydration, which may in turn affect your kidneys. Be sure to drink plenty of fluids.

• Severe stomach problems: any stomach issues that are severe or simply won't go away.

• Serious allergic reaction: swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, difficulty breathing or swallowing, a severe rash or itching, fainting, or a very rapid heartbeat.

• Changes in vision: if you have type 2 diabetes and notice any change in your eyesight, speak to your doctor.

• Increased heart rate: your heart feels as though it's racing or pounding while at rest, and this lasts for several minutes.

Who shouldn't take Wegovy pills

The manufacturer advises that you should not take Wegovy pills if:

• you're allergic to semaglutide or any of the other listed ingredients

• you've previously had a serious allergic reaction to semaglutide or any ingredient in Wegovy

• you or a close family member has ever had medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC), a type of thyroid cancer

• you have multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2)

Tell your prescriber before starting if you:

• have, or have had, problems with your pancreas or kidneys

• have type 2 diabetes alongside a history of diabetic retinopathy

• are due to have surgery or a procedure involving anaesthesia

• are pregnant or planning to become pregnant — Wegovy may harm your unborn baby, so you should stop taking it at least two months before trying to conceive

• are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed — breastfeeding isn't recommended while taking Wegovy pills

Always tell your prescriber about every medication you take, including prescription medicines, over-the-counter treatments, and vitamins and supplements. Wegovy can influence how some medicines work, and some medicines can affect how Wegovy works.

This is particularly important if you take diabetes medications such as insulin or sulfonylureas, since combining these with Wegovy raises your risk of hypoglycaemia.
