Zomig 2.5mg Tablets contain zolmitriptan and are used for the acute treatment of migraine attacks, helping to relieve headache and associated symptoms such as nausea and sensitivity to light and sound.
Description
Zomig 2.5mg Tablets contain zolmitriptan, a medicine from the triptan group used for the acute treatment of migraine with or without aura. The official leaflet explains that migraine symptoms may be caused by widened blood vessels in the head, and Zomig is thought to reduce this widening. This helps relieve headache and other migraine symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light and sound.
Zomig works only once a migraine attack has started. It is not used to prevent migraine attacks. This makes it suitable for treatment at the onset of migraine symptoms or once an attack is already underway.
The leaflet describes Zomig 2.5mg tablets as yellow, round tablets marked with the letter “Z” on one side. The official pack information lists blister packs containing 6 or 12 tablets, although not all pack sizes may be marketed.
How to Use
Always take Zomig exactly as your doctor, prescriber or pharmacist has told you. The official guidance states that the recommended dose to treat a migraine attack is one 2.5mg tablet. You can take it as soon as a migraine headache starts, although it may also be taken later during the attack. Swallow the tablet with water.
If symptoms persist or return within 24 hours, a second dose can be taken, but it should not be taken within 2 hours of the first dose. If 2.5mg does not give enough relief, a doctor may advise 5mg for later attacks.
Do not take more than 10mg in 24 hours. Zomig is not indicated for migraine prevention. The leaflet says use is not recommended in children, not recommended in adolescents aged 12 to 17 years, and safety and efficacy in adults over 65 years have not been systematically evaluated.
Ingredients
Active ingredient:
Each tablet contains 2.5mg zolmitriptan.
Other ingredients:
Hypromellose, iron oxide yellow (E172), lactose anhydrous, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, macrogol 400, macrogol 8000, sodium starch glycolate and titanium dioxide (E171).
Allergy / intolerance advice:
Each tablet contains 100mg lactose anhydrous. If you have been told by a doctor that you have an intolerance to some sugars, seek advice before taking this medicine.
Side Effects & Warnings
Do not take Zomig if you are allergic to zolmitriptan or any of the ingredients, if you have high blood pressure, ischaemic heart disease, angina, a history of heart attack, a previous stroke or TIA, or if you are taking ergotamine, ergot derivatives, or another 5-HT1 receptor agonist / triptan.
Speak to a doctor or pharmacist before use if you have risk factors for heart disease, liver problems, or if you are taking medicines for depression such as MAOIs, SSRIs or SNRIs, medicines like cimetidine, certain quinolone antibiotics, or St John’s Wort. The leaflet also warns that Zomig should only be used when the diagnosis of migraine is clear.
Possible side effects include sleepiness, dizziness, feeling sick, weakness, warmth, tingling, and sensations of heaviness, tightness or pressure in the throat, neck, chest or limbs. Serious side effects needing urgent medical advice include allergic reactions, severe chest pain, and symptoms suggesting heart or circulation problems.
During a migraine attack your reactions may be slower than usual, and Zomig may also make you feel sleepy, so take care with driving or operating machinery. If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, ask a doctor or pharmacist for advice before use.
