Description
Nurofen Joint & Back Pain Relief Max Strength 10% Gel – 40g is a topical anti-inflammatory gel containing ibuprofen 10% w/w (an NSAID). It is rubbed into the skin to help relieve pain, local heat and swelling (inflammation) in painful conditions affecting the joints and muscles.
Used for:
- Back pain
- Rheumatic and muscular pain
- Sprains and strains
- Sports injuries
Suitable for: adults and children over 12 years.
What it looks like: a clear to slightly opalescent, colourless (or almost colourless) gel.
How to Use
Always use exactly as described in the leaflet.
Dosage
Adults, the elderly and children over 12 years:
- Squeeze 2 to 5cm of gel onto the affected area (equivalent to 50mg to 125mg ibuprofen)
- Massage gently until absorbed
- Use no more often than every 4 hours
- Use no more than 4 times in any 24 hours
How to apply safely
- For application to the skin only. Never take by mouth.
- Use only on healthy, unbroken skin. Do not use on or near cuts or grazes.
- Avoid eyes, lips and mouth. If it gets into eyes, rinse with cold water and seek advice if needed.
- Wash hands after use (unless hands are the treated area).
- Do not apply a dressing to the same area after using the gel.
- Do not use on the genital area.
How long to use
- Speak to a doctor or pharmacist if you do not improve after 2 weeks or if symptoms get worse.
Ingredients
Active ingredient:
- Ibuprofen 10% w/w
Other ingredients:
- Hydroxyethylcellulose (E1525)
- Sodium hydroxide (E524)
- Benzyl alcohol (E1519)
- Isopropyl alcohol
- Purified water
Ingredient note: contains benzyl alcohol, which may cause allergic reactions and mild local irritation.
Side Effects & Warnings
Do not use this gel
- If you are allergic to ibuprofen, aspirin, or similar medicines (NSAIDs).
- If you have ever had asthma, rhinitis (allergic runny nose) or urticaria (hives) triggered by aspirin/ibuprofen/NSAIDs.
- On broken, damaged, infected or diseased skin.
- If you are in the last 3 months of pregnancy.
- Not recommended for children under 12 years.
Speak to a doctor or pharmacist before use if you:
- Have had an ulcer or stomach/intestine problem in the past
- Have kidney problems
- Have bronchial asthma or any allergic disease
- Are pregnant (first 6 months only if clearly necessary and advised) or breastfeeding (do not use if breastfeeding).
- Are using medicines such as blood pressure medicines (e.g. atenolol), blood thinners (e.g. warfarin), or aspirin/other NSAIDs.
Fire safety warning
- Do not smoke or go near naked flames while using this product: fabric (clothing, bedding, dressings) that has been in contact with the gel can burn more easily and is a serious fire hazard.
Possible side effects
Stop using and seek medical help urgently if you develop signs of a serious allergic reaction such as sudden wheezing, worsening asthma, breathing difficulty, swelling of eyelids/face/lips, widespread rash/itching/redness, or blistering/peeling skin.
Rarely, signs of kidney problems can occur, particularly in people with a history of kidney disease.
Skin may become sensitive to light; protect treated areas from direct sunlight.
