Sebco Coconut Oil Compound Ointment - 100g

Sebco Coconut Oil Compound Ointment 100g is a General Sales List (GSL) medicated topical ointment used in the management of dry, scaly skin conditions of the scalp including dandruff, seborrhoeic dermatitis, psoriasis and eczema. Its formulation combines coal tar solution 12% w/w, salicylic acid 2% w/w and sulphur 4% w/w in a coconut oil base to help soften, break down and remove scale, reduce itching and provide mild antiseptic and keratolytic effects when used regularly.

Sebco is based on the traditional preparation Unguentum Cocois Co, a coconut oil–based tar ointment that has been used by dermatologists and clinicians in the UK for over 70 years. 

Always use this medicine exactly as described in the patient information leaflet or as advised by a pharmacist or doctor.

Method of application:

• Apply a small amount to the affected areas of the scalp
• Gently massage into the scalp
• Leave on for at least 1 hour, or preferably overnight
• Wash out thoroughly using a suitable shampoo

Frequency of use:

• Use once daily or as directed by a healthcare professional
• Reduce frequency as symptoms improve

Important usage advice:

• Wash hands after application
• Avoid contact with the eyes, face and broken skin
• Do not use more often or for longer than recommended
• Intended for short-term use only
• If symptoms do not improve after 7 days or worsen, seek advice from a pharmacist or GP.

Active Ingredients:

• Coal tar solution 12% w/w – helps soften and reduce scale by slowing skin cell production and providing mild antiseptic properties.
• Salicylic acid 2% w/w – keratolytic agent that helps remove thickened skin and scale.
• Sulphur for external use 4% w/w – supports keratolytic activity and may have mild antibacterial/antiseptic effects.

Other Ingredients:

Coconut oil, white soft paraffin, glycerol, cetostearyl alcohol, liquid paraffin, polyoxyethylene glycerol monostearate, hard paraffin.

Sebco contains cetostearyl alcohol, which may cause sensitivity reactions in some individuals.

Do not use Sebco Ointment:

• In children under 12 years of age
• On broken, inflamed or infected skin
• On the face, eyes or genital areas
• If you are allergic to any of the ingredients

Warnings & precautions:

• For external use only
• Coal tar may increase sensitivity to sunlight; avoid excessive sun exposure during treatment
• The ointment may stain hair, clothing or bedding
• Avoid use on large areas of the body
• Discontinue use if irritation or worsening of symptoms occurs

Possible side effects (uncommon):

• Local skin irritation
• Burning or stinging sensation
• Increased sensitivity to sunlight
