Voltarol Back and Muscle Pain Relief Gel - 100g

Voltarol Back & Muscle Pain Relief Gel 1.16% – 100g is a medicated anti-inflammatory gel containing diclofenac (an NSAID). It’s formulated for rubbing into the skin to relieve pain and reduce inflammation and swelling in painful conditions affecting the joints and muscles.

Used to treat:

• Muscle and joint injuries (e.g. sprains, strains, bruises, backache, sports injuries)
• Tendonitis (e.g. tennis elbow)

What it’s like: a white, cooling, non-greasy, non-staining gel. The 100g pack may include a cap applicator/no-mess applicator depending on the tube format. 

Always read the leaflet before use. Use only on the skin.

Who can use it: Adults and adolescents 14 years and over. Not recommended under 14.

How much and how often:

• Apply a small amount to the painful/swollen area 3 to 4 times a day
• Allow at least 4 hours between applications
• Do not apply more than 4 times in any 24 hours
• A 1p to 2p coin-sized amount is usually enough (varies by area size)

How to apply (key steps):

• Rub in gently and do not apply to cuts, open wounds, rash or eczema
• After applying, do not cover with bandages or sticking plaster
• Avoid eyes and mouth; rinse eyes with clean water if contact occurs
• Unless hands are the treated area: wipe, then wash hands after use

How long to use:

• Contact a doctor if symptoms worsen or do not improve within 7 days
• Do not use for more than 14 days unless advised by a doctor
• For ages 14–17: if needed for more than 7 days, seek medical advice

Active ingredient: Diclofenac diethylammonium 1.16% (equivalent to 1g diclofenac sodium per 100g gel).

Other ingredients: Carbomers, cetomacrogol, cocoyl caprylocaprate, diethylamine, isopropyl alcohol, propylene glycol, liquid paraffin, perfume (contains benzyl benzoate), purified water.

Important ingredient note: contains propylene glycol and benzyl benzoate, which may cause mild localised skin irritation in some people. 

Do not use if:

• You are allergic to diclofenac (or any ingredient)
• You have ever had an allergic reaction to diclofenac or NSAIDs such as aspirin or ibuprofen (e.g. asthma/wheezing, rash/hives, facial swelling)
• You are in the last 3 months of pregnancy
• On rash/eczema, cuts, or open wounds

Key warnings and precautions

• Fire hazard: Do not smoke or go near naked flames while using. Fabric that has contacted the product burns more easily and is a serious fire hazard (washing may reduce build-up but not remove it completely).
• Avoid using on large areas or for a prolonged period unless advised.
• Skin may be more sensitive to sunlight; take care when sunbathing or using sun lamps.
• Speak to a pharmacist/doctor before use if you have or have had asthma or a stomach/duodenal ulcer.
• Pregnancy/breastfeeding: use only under medical advice (do not use in last 3 months; avoid applying to breasts and large areas while breastfeeding).

Possible side effects

Most effects are local skin reactions.

• Common: skin rash, itching, reddening or smarting
• Very rare: increased sensitivity to sun (sunburn with itching, swelling, blistering)
• Unknown frequency: local irritation, peeling of the skin, skin discolouration
• Stop use and seek urgent advice if you develop signs of a serious allergic reaction (e.g. wheeze/shortness of breath, swelling of face/lips/tongue/throat, blistering rash).
