Anbesol Adult Strength Gel - 10g

Anbesol Adult Strength Gel is a fast-acting oral gel for the temporary relief of pain caused by recurrent mouth ulcers and denture irritation in adults and children aged 12 years and over.

It contains:

• Lidocaine hydrochloride 2.0% w/w: a local anaesthetic that numbs the area by stopping pain sensation.
• Chlorocresol 0.1% w/w and cetylpyridinium chloride 0.02% w/w: antiseptics that help kill bacteria and support hygiene while the sore area heals.

Ideal for targeted, on-the-spot use when mouth ulcers or denture rubbing make eating, drinking, or speaking uncomfortable.

Always use exactly as described in the leaflet.

Adults, elderly, and children aged 12 years and over:

• Apply a small (pea-sized) amount to the affected area using a clean fingertip.
• One application is usually sufficient to obtain temporary pain relief.
• Do not apply more frequently than every 3 hours.

If symptoms continue:

• If symptoms last more than 7 days or recur frequently, speak to a pharmacist, doctor, or dentist.

If too much is used or swallowed:

• If large quantities are used or accidentally swallowed, seek medical advice urgently (contact a doctor/A&E and take the pack/leaflet). 

Active ingredients:

• Lidocaine hydrochloride 2.0% w/w
• Chlorocresol 0.1% w/w
• Cetylpyridinium chloride 0.02% w/w

Other ingredients:

Alcohol (ethanol), clove oil, glycerol, hydroxypropyl cellulose, sodium saccharin, purified water.

Alcohol content: Contains 128mg ethanol per pea-sized amount (0.2g).

Do not use if:

• You are allergic to lidocaine hydrochloride, chlorocresol, cetylpyridinium chloride, or similar local anaesthetics.
• You have porphyria.
• For children under 12 years, or for teething in children.

Warnings and precautions:

• Do not use more than recommended. Overuse may increase absorption and can cause serious side effects such as convulsions (fits).
• Use with caution if you have open wounds or damaged areas in the mouth lining, as this may increase absorption.
• Chlorocresol may cause allergic reactions in sensitive individuals.

Interactions (ask a pharmacist if unsure):

Tell your pharmacist/doctor if you take medicines such as antiarrhythmics (e.g., mexiletine, amiodarone), erythromycin, itraconazole, cimetidine, beta-blockers, and others listed in the leaflet.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding:

Ask a healthcare professional before use if pregnant or breastfeeding. Small amounts of lidocaine may pass into breast milk, but the leaflet notes this should not harm the baby when used as directed.

Possible side effects:

• Allergic reactions (e.g., difficulty breathing, rash, itch)
• Mouth ulcers have been reported
• Dermatitis (red, itchy, scaly skin)
